According to analyst Daniel Ahmed, Steam has released more than 6000 games this year, 1500 more than the last year. This number is more than the combined number of games released in the last 10 year (i.e. from 2005 to 2015) on Steam.
The number has seen this much growth because, Steam released its Steam Direct Service in June replacing the Greenlight service. This service let game game developers to publish their games directly on the platform without going through the hefty approval process. The only catch was that they have to pay $100 fee.Clearly, this fee hasn’t stopped developers from putting their games on steam.
A quick update to the number of games released on Steam chart.
This is as of early November. Year isn’t over yet and there have already been more than 6,000 games released on Steam this year.
That’s almost as many as the number of games released between 2005 and 2015. pic.twitter.com/RCIUJFprzG

Another factor which accelerated the number of releases is the ease of making new Games now a days. Developer’s don’t need to have much knowledge of coding or modeling or animation. Most modern gaming engines support drag and drop to achieve this task.
We should note that, although the number of games are increasing, and analysts are predicting that this number could pass 7000 mark, the quality of games is decreasing. We aren’t seeing quality games on steam lately.
We have to wait to see what developers have in store for us in 2018.
